Background of the Study
Geopolitical tensions often arise from a combination of historical, ethnic, religious, and political factors, and these tensions can significantly impact community development. Chanchaga Local Government Area (LGA) in Niger State, with its diverse population, has experienced various forms of geopolitical tensions that have hindered efforts toward sustainable development (Ali & Zubairu, 2024). These tensions manifest in conflicts over land use, ethnic rivalries, and religious divisions, all of which can undermine local governance and slow the pace of development (Nuhu & Haruna, 2025). The role of local governments in managing these tensions is critical, as effective governance structures can mitigate the negative impacts of geopolitical conflicts on community development (Sulaimon & Lawal, 2023). This study aims to examine how geopolitical tensions have influenced community development in Chanchaga LGA, focusing on the role of local governance in fostering social cohesion and ensuring the equitable distribution of resources amidst these challenges (Nuhu & Haruna, 2025). The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of how local governments can address the complex issues arising from geopolitical tensions to promote community development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Geopolitical tensions in Chanchaga LGA have led to challenges in promoting community development, with conflict affecting key areas such as access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure (Sulaimon & Lawal, 2023). These tensions often stem from ethnic and religious factors, which make it difficult for local authorities to implement development programs effectively. The study aims to explore the impact of geopolitical tensions on community development in Chanchaga LGA and assess how local governance has responded to these challenges.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical evaluation of how geopolitical tensions influence community development, which is important for improving governance and promoting sustainable development in conflict-prone areas. The findings will be useful to local government authorities, policymakers, and NGOs working in Chanchaga LGA and other similar regions, as it will offer practical recommendations for managing conflicts and fostering development (Nuhu & Haruna, 2025).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is focused on Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State and specifically examines the influence of geopolitical tensions on community development. It does not extend to other regions in Niger State or Nigeria. The study may be limited by access to local conflict data and the challenge of isolating the direct impact of geopolitical tensions on community development outcomes.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Geopolitical Tensions: Conflicts or strained relations that arise due to political, ethnic, or religious differences, often affecting governance and social stability (Ali & Zubairu, 2024).

Community Development: The process by which local communities improve their living standards, infrastructure, and access to services through collective efforts and governance (Sulaimon & Lawal, 2023).
